Sam’s Journey Produktion
25.07.2017

Deswegen kommen so genannte

Sam’s Journey Production Update

We are thrilled now that we have received the first load of Sam boxes fresh from the factory!

The boxes turned out even better than we hoped. The surface is quite durable
and relatively water resistent. The boxes are robust… and finally they are real
cardboard boxes like we always wanted them to be! Like in the 80s, only cooler!

The boxes (and a lot of other things in the final distribution of Sam) are hand made.
They are also not ready as such, because we don’t want any cartridges or disks to
fly around in the box. Therefore, we put so-called inlays into these boxes that hold
what’s inside. The design of the inlays (they need custom made implements to
make them fit) is ready and along with the boxes we have also received the
first couple of hundred inlays.

And that means the next step in the production is beginning for us now:
we have to glue the inlays into the boxes! We were testing out numerous
glues until we found one that suits Sam, however we are good to go now!

In the end, every piece of Sam’s Journey will be a unique labour of love.

Forum64 & Protovision Game Competition 2017
01.07.2017

The Forum64 Game Competition has been very successful and a lot of fun in the past years.

It now has a new name: Forum64 & Protovision Game Competition or F64PGC 2017 for short!

The compo is still organized by same guy as before, namely TheRealWanderer (welcome our newest member!) and the rules are almost unchanged, but now you can also sign up at the Protovision homepage. A Forum64 account is not required, making it easier for participants around the world to take part in the compo!

Everyone who hands in a game will receive a Protovision 5 Euros voucher for downloads and has a chance for a bigger monetary price. In addition, the winner receives his own game in a fully printed cardboard box. All games handed in will be available for free on our website. We might want to develop some of the games further and make them a physical release later on.

This year’s competition is all about SPORTS GAMES.

The compo starts NOW (1st of July) and runs until end of April 2018.

Signing up is open until end of October.

If you cannot enter the compo with a game entry but want to support it, there is a donation button on the compo page.

All money collected will be passed on to the participants!

Progress of Sam’s Journey
10.01.2017

Sam’s Journey has reached an important milestone: Knights of Bytes have created 60 level segments that will make up Sam’s world, and populated them all with enemies and items now. A total of 4332 (!) objects have been placed into the maps.

While the levels are now going to be reviewed by testers, Knights of Bytes are moving on to the next todo on the list: boss fights!

On the production front, the bonus items to be included into Sam boxes have been decided upon and custom box inlays are currently being designed to „host“ all items adequately.

NEWS FROM THE C64 SCENE: Upcoming RPG: Unknown Realm

A new C64 role playing game is in the making. It was launched into a Kickstarter project and has already collected an impressive amount of money for it! We have of course backed the project already and wish Stirring Dragon Games all the best with their effort!

Just like Knights of Bytes with Sam’s Journey, they have been working fulltime on the project.

Check it out here and back it so that the stretch goals are reached, including a musical score by Chris Hülsbeck:

Sneak Peak: Sam’s Editions
07.10.2016

Knights of Bytes and Protovision are happy to announce three editions of Sam’s Journey that will be available through the Protovision shop when the time has come:

– Boxed Disk Edition 45.00 Euros
– Boxed Cartridge Edition 55.00 Euros
– Download Edition 19.99 Euros

Sam’s Journey will be the first game to feature our new fully printed cardboard boxes. Within the box you’ll find a colored manual (almost the same size as the box), an equally sized world map and further goodies to be revealed later on. The only difference between the Disk and Cart versions will be that the cartridge version saves automatically while in the disk version saving is triggered through a menu.

A new version of the C64 emulator Vice is currently being worked on that will support GMod2 (That’s the cartridge Sam uses) so emulator users will be able to play the cartridge version.

Protovision on Gamescom
16.09.2016

Together with our friends in Out of Order Softworks, we shared a booth at Gamescom – featuring a huge printed C64 screen with a blinking cursor and of course a possibility to play our games – including the upcoming Sam’s Journey!

Such a trade fair is an inexplicable experience. Magical things happen there.
For example, a guy came to our stand and played our games, then presented a C64 disk and said he wanted to have a look what’s on it.

labyrinth2We found a complete and unreleased C64 game on it that he wrote in 1989!

We will keep you informed about the release of this game… it’s a two player split screen Pac Man game with level editor.

We also pre-released a couple of fine product updates on Gamescom – more on that below.

More Protovision games at itch.io

As we cannot sell downloads to non-Germany-based-customers through our shop, we started to offer our downloads also via itch.io where they are available to everyone.

Now, *all* Protovision downloads are also available on our itch.io page!

We also created PC/OSX Emubundle versions of most of the games so you have the possibility to run the games on such unworthy computers more easily.

New C64 game: The Camp Caravan Edition
11.08.2016

A revised version of the adventure satire „The Camp“ is now for sale in a limited box edition in our webshop.

The Camp already put the Forum64 game compo 2015 into a campfire mood and is based on a real life camp site – so whoever gets stuck in the game should pay the camp site a visit to get some inspiration.

Next to enhanced graphics and some new areas to discover, the box features a small survival set, including a bear coaster which was especially made for this game.

THE new platformer is coming: Sam’s Journey
04.05.2016

Chester Kollschen and Stefan Gutsch (Bomb Mania, Metal Dust…) are back!

Together with Alexander Ney they are the Knights of Bytes and they are working on what is most probably the best scrolling platformer that has ever been made for the C64. We are proud and overly happy to announce that Sam’s Journey will be available through Protovision sometime later this year!

More details on Sam can be found on the Knights of Bytes homepage and also on the Protovision page, of course.

As one disk feels to tight for Sam already, we are planning to ship it out to you either on two disks or on cartridge.

Protovision goes Cartridge

In cooperation with Knights of Bytes and individual Computers, Protovision is going new ways in terms of game cartridges. The project dates back to the times of Enforcer 2, which was supposed to become a cartridge game.

Enforcer 2 didn’t work out – but the cartridge ("G-Mod") is not forgotten!

Chester Kollschen (known for Bomb Mania, Ice Guys and Metal Dust) in close cooperation with Jens Schönfeld has developed the cartridge further so that it fits the needs of the upcoming hit game "Sam’s Journey": the cartridge not only holds multiple disk sides full of data, it also allows to permanently save data on it and more.

Protovision plans to release both new games on this cartridge and also re-release older games on it.
