Stoker – New video footage of the platform game

"Stoker" gained quite some attention while still in an earlier state of development. Rhys Clatworthy provided recent video footage, presenting new fireballs for our dragon, dust when landing as well as a new, faster scrolling routine. Enjoy!

In development: new C64 games at Protovision

We’re keeping things trasnsparent – we’d like to announce a few new C64 games, which are currently in development:

Briley Witch Chronicles – a humour-laden RPG with cat, based on the book series by Sarah Jane Avory.

Interview with Sarah:

Space Moguls – an ode to the underrated space game M.U.L.E. – with 4 Player Interface support.

Cursed Tomb – because who doesn’t like to raid tombs every now and then!

Protovision’s growing membership base

We are over the moon! Let’s say hello to our new members: programmers Sarah Jane Avery (Briley Witch Chronicles) and Zbych (Yoomp!64 and Cursed Tomb) and musician / project manager –SkY– .

Galencia physical edition coming soon

The Galaga style C64 shooter Galencia will be available within the next weeks.

Everything is ready, but we are still waiting for the boxes to arrive, before we can make Galencia available to you.

We expect them to arrive in two weeks.
Galencia will be available on disk, cartridge and cassette!

Order Sam’s Journey TODAY!

The time has come: Sam’s Journey can be
ordered from the Protovision Shop!

Sam will NOT be shipped right away, though.

We are currently finalizing the game and are collecting funds to produce all Sams needed.
Sam’s Journey will be shipped in December (exact date is not yet defined).

The download versions of Sam will be made available at the same time as the physical versions ship out.

Everyone who orders a physical release of Sam also receives the digital versions.

Please understand that due to the high amount of orders, shipping out all Sams will take weeks.

Those who pre-registered Sam will be treated with priority and will receive an additional email with information on how to complete the order.

Sam’s Journey: Auction dropped In favor of Early Ordering!

After carefully considering all feedback that we received about the planned Sam’s Journey auction, we have decided to dismiss the auction idea and instead allow for payed orders of the upcoming C64 game Sam’s Journey right away.

That means: Sam can be ordered starting in October and will be shipped in December!

Also on the 1st of October, the full contents of the Sam box package will be revealed.

Thank you to all who have offered to send us their payment in advance! You are all our heroes as this helps us very much to produce enough Sams so we can deliver quickly to everyone in December.

At the time of delivery, also the download version of Sam will be made available (all physical editions of Sam include also the digital distribution).
If you have a pre-registration of Sam, we will send you a dedicated email in October with instructions on completing your order.

Here you are with the revised timeline for the release of Sam’s Journey:

  • 30 September 2017: pre-registration phase ends
  • 1 October 2017: Sam can be ordered in the Protovision shop
  • December 2017 (exact date to be announced): Sam will be shipped out / Downloads will be made available

Please bear in mind that shipment will take a while with the exceptional high number of orders.
Those who have a pre-registration of Sam’s Journey will be handled with priority when it comes to shipping out Sam.

October is the month of the Sam Auction!

UPDATE 12.09.2017 Auction dropped In favor of Early Ordering!
Read more on Facebook.

Multiple Sam’s Journey enthusiasts have contacted us and asked if it were possible to get a Sam with a low serial number.

Actually, we did not intend to attach serial numbers to Sam at all, but now we will give the first 64 Sams a serial number and auction them to the highest bidders.

This way, everyone has the same chances for obtaining a Sam with a low serial number – or you can stay out of it entirely and buy a regular Sam without any serial number.

Sam’s Journey Produktion

Deswegen kommen so genannte

Sam’s Journey Production Update

We are thrilled now that we have received the first load of Sam boxes fresh from the factory!

The boxes turned out even better than we hoped. The surface is quite durable
and relatively water resistent. The boxes are robust… and finally they are real
cardboard boxes like we always wanted them to be! Like in the 80s, only cooler!

The boxes (and a lot of other things in the final distribution of Sam) are hand made.
They are also not ready as such, because we don’t want any cartridges or disks to
fly around in the box. Therefore, we put so-called inlays into these boxes that hold
what’s inside. The design of the inlays (they need custom made implements to
make them fit) is ready and along with the boxes we have also received the
first couple of hundred inlays.

And that means the next step in the production is beginning for us now:
we have to glue the inlays into the boxes! We were testing out numerous
glues until we found one that suits Sam, however we are good to go now!

In the end, every piece of Sam’s Journey will be a unique labour of love.

New game in development: Wormhole

Another game to be released soon by Protovision is Wormhole from TRS!

You’re an agent on a super secret, super dangerous and world-depending-on-it-important mission.

You have to shoot and run your way through the 3 game worlds and rescue the professor, the only person in the multiverse who can save the earth.

News around Sam

As the release is slowly approaching, we are now accepting preregistrations for Sam’s Journey on our in development site!

Chester Kollschen, the coder of Sam’s Journey, was interviewed in February by Commodore Plus.

Sam is, by the way, still happily jumping, striking and throwing around items. We had issues with the first cardboard boxes printed (the printing house had zoomed our input files), but they are resolved now. We will soon disclose pictures of the box and some of the feelies.

8 Bit Civilizations in the press

8 Bit Civilizations has raised a few eyebrows all around the world – even in mainstream media.

Here is a selection of news entries:

Fabian Hertel, the maker of 8-Bit Civilizations, was interviewed in the January issue of the Kilobyte Magazine.

Demoversion of 8 Bit Civilizations released

Our newest Protovision member Fabian Hertel presents „8 Bit Civilizations„, a fan remake of Civilization 2 for the C64!

We have opened up an „In Devlopment“ site for this project where you can get a fully playable demo version of the game at no cost.

Leech it now and provide feedback.

Progress of Sam’s Journey

Sam’s Journey has reached an important milestone: Knights of Bytes have created 60 level segments that will make up Sam’s world, and populated them all with enemies and items now. A total of 4332 (!) objects have been placed into the maps.

While the levels are now going to be reviewed by testers, Knights of Bytes are moving on to the next todo on the list: boss fights!

On the production front, the bonus items to be included into Sam boxes have been decided upon and custom box inlays are currently being designed to „host“ all items adequately.

Sneak Peak: Sam’s Editions

Knights of Bytes and Protovision are happy to announce three editions of Sam’s Journey that will be available through the Protovision shop when the time has come:

– Boxed Disk Edition 45.00 Euros
– Boxed Cartridge Edition 55.00 Euros
– Download Edition 19.99 Euros

Sam’s Journey will be the first game to feature our new fully printed cardboard boxes. Within the box you’ll find a colored manual (almost the same size as the box), an equally sized world map and further goodies to be revealed later on. The only difference between the Disk and Cart versions will be that the cartridge version saves automatically while in the disk version saving is triggered through a menu.

A new version of the C64 emulator Vice is currently being worked on that will support GMod2 (That’s the cartridge Sam uses) so emulator users will be able to play the cartridge version.

Magische Dinge passieren dort.

Protovision on Gamescom

Together with our friends in Out of Order Softworks, we shared a booth at Gamescom – featuring a huge printed C64 screen with a blinking cursor and of course a possibility to play our games – including the upcoming Sam’s Journey!

Such a trade fair is an inexplicable experience. Magical things happen there.
For example, a guy came to our stand and played our games, then presented a C64 disk and said he wanted to have a look what’s on it.

labyrinth2We found a complete and unreleased C64 game on it that he wrote in 1989!

We will keep you informed about the release of this game… it’s a two player split screen Pac Man game with level editor.

We also pre-released a couple of fine product updates on Gamescom – more on that below.

Protovision and Out of Order join forces

Protovision alone is not chaotic and omnipotent enough – therefore we are that we can officially announce the start of our cooperation with Out of Order Softworks!

Out of Order is renowned in Germany for their hilarious adventure series "Leisure Suit Leo" and the long lasting event series "Out of Orderia".

Now if you haven’t heard of them before, shame on you, because it  does seem as if you didn’t check out all the links in our link section with the due respect! Tsk, tsk…

OK, to make a long story short: we have a lot of stuff to work on together and we’re immensely looking forward to a fruitful coop with many new releases for our Commodore from Protovision and Out of Order Softworks!

Protovision und Out of Order legen zusammen

Out of Order Softworks starten!

Pac It: A continuous flow of small updates

Aaaaalso in the last weeks and months there was good progress around Pac It!

I am proud especially of the turn disk screen or rather its size. The loader/depacker system stays in memory all the time and should therefore be small – but as Pac It will presumably need two disk sides, it also requires a screen to kindly ask the user to turn his disk. Common programmers might have the practical idea of using the ROM charset and just present a dull text, but no, I was too hardheaded on that one to do that! Now I have my own charset, one sprite, two tiny tables with flash colours and the text/code for the screen in only $02c0 bytes. That simply asks for bragging around. But the best thing is: it works and it is complete! And that makes the whole I/O system complete. Wonderful. Further updates:

pac1 * After a rather long odyssee the intro music is finally final! Matching the screen to the intro and vice versa was a hell of a task. Done!

pac1 * Neat little screens now present not only the passwords but also bits of the story of pac it in between the worlds. The story strikes you as being completely rational and well thought-through. Not strange and odd and all mixed up like you think. No no, not at all. Anyway the interlude sequences are also complete and ready to go! As expected there for dozens of insects that required taming, but now the sequences load and they depack and they run through and have nice musics and what else should you ever want in life?

OK. I’m currently working on the core of the game – mainly to get enough disk space out and to optimize loading times, but also to get to terms with all the slime left a little tiny bit undone before. For example I have worked on the score system today and tweaked around with when which player gets what score bonus and when does he receive an extra life for it. Or rather the team, because Pac It is a team game and the players share a common life pool.
